You splash in the shallows on the Centre Island beach, a lifeguard scanning fellow swimmers from his tower, the hot August sun beating down on your sunscreen-slathered body. A seagull cries overhead, when suddenly you notice a dad berating his teenage daughter. The wind and a ferry horn conceal most of the angry exchange, but you hear him yell the words “socialist” and “nihilism,” and wonder what those mean. The teen twists free from her father’s grip and yells something loud and terrible over her shoulder, the profanity still new to your ears, the other families gawking at the scene. She runs toward you, and you realize her flapping shirt has a band’s name on it. You notice her beautiful eyes, blackened with running mascara, before looking down again and beginning to sound out the band’s name from the silkscreened letters. F…U…C…it’s a bad word too.
